Course Description
This course emphasizes the consolidation of the literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a range of challenging literary texts from various periods, countries, and cultures; interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts; and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on using academic language coherently and confidently, selecting the reading strategies best suited to particular texts and particular purposes for reading, and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for university, college, or the workplace.

Penny Anne
Penny Anne holds a Master of Arts in Educational Technology from Canada’s acclaimed program at Concordia University and a TESL Canada accreditation. As an IELTS examiner, she tested over 4000 students all over Northern China for the British Council.
Penny Anne has developed a comprehensive IELTS program that is focused on developing skills. Strategies are based on how each part of the test is actually scored. The digital resources for Gaming the IELTS are interactive and modern in approach, suiting learners from age 13 to adult. She has also supported her students’ applications to universities in China, Canada and the USA.
Gaming the IELTS is for serious students who want to prepare for Western approaches to both project-based and independent learning, and as such contributes to both the personal and professional growth of participants, especially those headed to university. Business professionals seeking test preparation for citizenship may be more comfortable with a private tutoring preparation.
Strategy Course for the IELTS Gaming the IELTS
The 80-hour IELTS strategy course for Writing and Speaking has a class limit of 14, and students must have prerequisite scores of at least 5 in Speaking and Writing in order to be admitted. This is a skills-based course designed to focus on the practice of strategies used in each part of the test in order to maximize scores. For every hour of class, students can expect to accomplish an hour of homework.
MATERIALS. For the duration of the course, students will be provided with a binder of job aids to support their assignments and reduce the need for note-taking.
WEBSITE. Access to a website of activities is provided where students can access and submit assignments in speaking and writing, learn tailored lexicons for ten IELTS vocabulary themes, and complete grammar exercises with automated feedback.
LENGTH. Pick your speed and attend for 11 or up to 22 weeks. The program runs continuously so that preparation can begin when a student is ready. Students joining in the middle of the program will attend make-up classes in 10 strategy lessons on Zoom.
Anyone enrolled in Gaming the IELTS may attend, for as long as they wish, free events and demo lessons we conduct around the city.
COURSE CONTENTS LIST
A. Pre-Test. An intake IELTS test consisting of one hour of writing and 15 minutes of Speaking will be scheduled.
B. Live Classes. The Academic program of 80 hours consists of thirty sessions of two hours (60 hours) including 16 hours of Strategy; 20 hours of Writing and lexicon building (Task 1 and Task 2 IELTS), 8 hours of Reading strategy and practice; 8 hours of Listening practice, and 8 hours of Grammar. Live classes will cover a chronological period of 11 weeks or 2.5 months but may be doubled for students who wish a slower pace and fewer weekly classes.
C. Personal Tutoring, One-on-one private tutoring packages are intended for written and spoken test practice; add 20 hours for skill-building.

Writing Package (Zoom). Ten Task 2 essays are scored for each individual with written feedback and personal consultations. Essay topics are assigned from 10 major topic areas and the school input to each is 30 minutes (10 hours total).

Speaking Package. (Zoom) Ten 30-minute practice sessions on various IELTS topics and tests. The school input to each is 30 minutes (10 hours total).
